Do you dare step back in time, and experience life as a prisoner at Bodmin Jail? Or perhaps you’d prefer the commanding presence of a Warden, or even in the ultimate luxuries reserved only for The Governor?
On Friday, 4th April, Bodmin Jail officially launched their brand-new immersive experiences, transporting guests back to the 18th century within the walls of the meticulously restored former prison. Bryna Jordan and Joe Allen were among the first to take part, stepping into the shoes of prisoners for an evening that combined history, fine dining and paranormal intrigue.
A Warden’s Welcome
After a drinks reception, canapés and a brief introduction to what was in store for us, we were introduced to our ‘Warden’, Kat, whose performance was nothing short of stellar.
She was the highlight of the whole experience, barking orders at the group, scaring us into submission while delivering fascinating historical insights into Bodmin Jail’s past. She seamlessly balanced intimidation with education, ensuring that we not only respected the space and its history but also immersed ourselves fully in our roles.
One of the most compelling stories we learned was that of William Hampton, the last prisoner to be hanged at Bodmin Jail in 1909 for the murder of 15-year-old Emily Tredrea. This tragic tale set the stage for the eerie atmosphere that would carry through the night.
Dining Like a Prisoner
Perhaps one of the most important and immersive parts of the experience was dinner in The Chapel Restaurant. As prisoners, you do not have the ‘right’ to choose what you eat and are served a 3-course meal whilst seated at a long communal table under the watchful eyes of Wardens Kat and Kai, who would reprimand guests for daring to stand up and use the bathroom without permission.
We were served a simple, yet filling, 3 courses consisting of a starter of Wild Mushroom and Celeriac Soup, Braised Cornish Beef and Potato Pie and a Chocolate Brownie for dessert (after some bribing of the Warden, of course!). The food was outstanding, with incredible flavours and one can only imagine a few steps up from what prisoners were fed centuries ago!
Head Chef, Dane Watkins, shared with us the curation of the menus and how all produce was sourced locally; the beef for our pie was reared just miles up the road by James Kittow and the eggs served with breakfast were from B Corp certified St. Ewe Free Range Eggs.

A Brush with the Paranormal
After dinner, we descended into the cellars, an area notorious for paranormal activity. The dimly lit corridors and ancient stone walls provided the perfect setting for ghost hunting, guided once again by our Wardens. With ghost hunting equipment in hand, we explored the depths of the jail, hearing chilling tales of past residents. While we didn’t witness any supernatural events that evening, we were told that some nights are far more active than others. The experience was undeniably eerie, whether the spirits and poltergeists chose to stay hidden or not.
Sleeping in a Haunted Cell
Our accommodations for the night were in a luxury cell, located on the top corner of the Naval Wing, once home to women and children before the Navy took over 1887. Here is where we were able to really appreciate the thought, effort and detail that went into the £50 million renovation on the Grade-II listed former prison. The room was a perfect blend of historical preservation and modern comfort, featuring original prison elements like hooks and brickwork alongside contemporary luxuries such as underfloor heating, a generous bathtub and rainfall shower.
A Journey Through Time
Although not owned by the same company, it is heavily encouraged to visit the Bodmin Jail Museum just next door, with the price of admission being included in your experience. Exploring the museum deepened our understanding of the jail’s past and further enhanced the immersive nature of our stay. It’s an engaging attraction that should not be missed.
Final Verdict
From the dedicated staff who bought the experience to life and the attention to detail throughout the entire hotel, every aspect of Bodmin Jail Hotel’s immersive stay has been carefully crafted to transport guests into another time. The blend of theatrical performances, fine dining, historical storytelling, and paranormal intrigue makes this an unforgettable experience. Whether you choose to be a Prisoner, Warden or Governor, one thing is certain – you won’t leave the same as you arrived.
The only question is… which role will you choose?
