Opening night and I must confess, I’ve been waiting a long time for this one. Full disclosure. I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing &Juliet on the West End and it blew me away!
When it was announced the show would be hitting the road for a UK tour, I was relieved to see Truro in the lineup. There’s something magical about experiencing the grandeur of a big London show here in our own back yard – and what a venue The Hall for Cornwall is! Shout out to their amazing volunteers and top level hospitality.
I’m sure you’re already familiar with the story of Romeo and Juliet, but what happens when you retell this iconic tale using some of the biggest pop songs from the last 30 years? Add a generous helping of comedy and a sprinkle of neon and you have something rather special.
You can tell from the very opening number the cast have a lot of fun putting on this show. Their flawless vocals, high energy and dedication to putting on a genuinely funny and entertaining performance is a sheer delight to witness.
Familiar faces (and instantly recognisable voices) included Jay McGuiness (from The Wanted) as Shakespeare and Lee Latchford-Evans (from Steps) as Lance. Rising star Gerardine Sacdalan stars as Juliet packing an absolute punch – a role she was born to play. Bryna Jordan caught up with Gerardine on the CHAOS Radio Daytime show ahead of opening night. You can hear that interview below…
Lara Denning as Anne is a natural, bringing effortless laughter, emotion and a standout singing voice to the stage. Other fantastic cast members include Sandra Marvin as Angelique, Ben Jackson Walker as Romeo, Kyle Cox as Francois and Jordan Broatch as May. A notable mention should also be made to the extremely talented chorus and the band who deliver flawless and beat perfect performances. I know I’m not the only one who would agree as the night ended with the entire auditorium on their feet, clapping, dancing and singing along with pride. Something not always guaranteed in a room full of the great British public.
When I say, I couldn’t stop smiling to the point my face genuinely hurts, I’m being serious. This show is a delight to watch and it’s genuinely impressive how many familiar and much loved pop songs they manage to squeeze in – each with their own unique restyling. Without giving away any spoilers the listen out for the expertly crafted mash up of Katy Perry and Ariana Grande in one of the funniest scenes of the show.
&Juliet shines bright. If you need a break from the troubles of the world, this show is a refreshing respite that reinforces a message of positivity and joy. Love is love. Stay true to yourself and don’t let anyone get in your way.
Hands down this will be your new favourite musical. It’s everything you need and more. If you take one thing away from this review – do yourself a favour, call up your friends and family and snap up those last remaining tickets quick!
