The Original Art Shop in Truro was buzzing with excitement as artists, friends, and family gathered for the closing night of its People’s Choice Award, writes Janice Rose.
This popular competition, created by gallery owner Julianne Kinley, has become a highly anticipated event on the Cornish art scene.
“I wanted to create an event that not only showcases the variety of artistic talent here in Cornwall but also allows the community to have a say in selecting their favourite piece,” she explained to CHAOS Radio.
This year’s exhibition brought together over 20 artists, displaying a diverse range of artistic styles. Wandering through the gallery and chatting with the artists, I could feel their passion – it was both palpable and infectious, inspiring me to rush home, dust off my art supplies, and start creating right away.
As the evening wore on, anticipation grew for the winner’s announcement. Finally, Julianne took to the stage to announce this year’s People’s Choice winner: Lucinda Holland, a rising star in the field of pet portraiture.
Lucinda’s winning piece, Cat in the Clouds, a mesmerizing portrait of a white cat gazing ethereally into the heavens, captivated voters.
Only six months into her artistic journey, Lucinda described art as a personal form of healing.
“Art has been my solace,” she shared, reflecting on the personal journey that led her here.
After experiencing a period of loss, Lucinda found comfort in painting, using it as a creative outlet to connect with her emotions.
“I aim to capture a moment of emotion,” she explained, “to convey the essence of love and connection, especially in the animals I portray.”
The crowd erupted in applause as Lucinda accepted her award, visibly moved and grateful for the recognition. With a humble nod, she mentioned that she had won by just a single vote, underscoring the high calibre of artwork displayed throughout the event.
The Original Art Shop ’s commitment to supporting local artists, like Lucinda, extends beyond simply displaying their work and hosting competitions.
Julianne, an artist herself, is dedicated to fostering local talent by providing guidance and creating a welcoming space where artists feel valued and seen. This commitment was evident in every conversation I had with gallery visitors.
As the People’s Choice Art competition came to a close, it was clear that Julianne’s vision of a welcoming, inclusive space where artists can thrive had been beautifully realised.
The gallery’s warm, inviting atmosphere served as a reminder of art’s power to bring people together and to celebrate Cornwall’s limitless creative talent.
