‘Mon the Biff!’: Scottish rock titans make explosive Cornish debut

Pictures: CHAOS Digital; Biffy Clyro lit up the Eden Sessions, finally bringing their full-throttle live show to Cornwall

Renowned Scottish three-piece Biffy Clyro rocked the Eden Sessions stage for their first ever gig in Cornwall, kicking off two back-to-back shows amongst the biomes, writes Meah Howlett.

Fresh from their set at Glastonbury festival, anticipation was in the air, as well as some uninvited guests, as flying ant day was in full swing, but it didn’t dampen the crowd’s spirits. Even the stagehand hoovering the runway stage fetched a cheer from the audience.

Kicking off the evening were alternative rock duo Nova Twins in support, with the crowd clapping along to their new single ‘Piranha’. They reflected on the “dark times” for trans rights and ongoing conflicts across the World but said there was “hope” as they introduced their track ‘Cleopatra’. An explosion of rock energy from the first riff, they visibly had fun strutting along the stage and singing in the crowd, as they led a “N-O-V-A” chant; transfixing a sea of Biffy devotees, that will certainly have had Nova Twins on their lips as they left.

The stage lit up in blues and pinks as Biffy Clyro arrived on stage to a roar in the crowd. They were joined by a full band of incredibly talented touring musicians of guitar, keys, and strings, starting the evening with ‘A Little Love’ – which garnered a lot of love from the audience.

Biffy were on fire – sonically and literally, with the dazzling pyrotechnics – as beer, light-up sunglasses, bubbles, and fire flew through the air, amongst a sea of clapping, headbanging, and even a little mosh pit here and there.

“Are you ready to sing along,” front-man Simon Neil asked the fans, and they certainly were. Despite being a long way from home, it seemed Biffy Clyro couldn’t have felt more at home, showing their love and appreciation for the crowd — a tribe of loyal fans whose enthusiasm, hearty singing voices, and applause did not waver throughout.

Fans as young as 6-years-old were stood side-by-side with rock fan veterans, as they headbanged to ‘Wolves of Winter’, chanted “Mon the Biff!”, crowd-surfed to ‘Tiny Indoor Fireworks’, and joined a mega-sing-along of ‘Black Chandelier’ – becoming an acapella ensemble of strangers, united by their love of Biffy.

Perfectly weaving a heartfelt raw rendition of ‘Rearrange’ framed by floating pink squares and whimsical instrumentals, with a gritty and grungy wall of sound, and fan-favourites like ‘Mountains’, it would be hard not to fall in love with this band; for all those who may not have been a Biffy stan just yet, they were treated to a mesmerising light show, undeniably beautiful lyricism, and an excitable and friendly atmosphere.

Under the light of a full moon, an encore began with Neil debuting a solo-acoustic version of their new single ‘A Thousand and One’, which he sang beautifully whilst enveloped in a solitary blue light, before he was re-joined by his bandmates for the rousing ‘Bubbles’ which the audience sang back to them at the top of their voices.

“We’ve been waiting to play here for years…” Simon said, but crowds don’t have long to wait to see the spectacle again, as they take to the stage again tonight (Thursday), to wow Cornish crowds once more.

This was the next act of an impressive Eden Sessions line-up for 2025 that continues with:

Saturday July 12th – Madness plus Rhoda Dakar

Sunday July 13th – The Libertines plus special guests
