‘Carbis Babes’ turn out in their droves for inaugural meeting of new WI

An inaugural and introductory meeting of Carbis Babes Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday, 12th March at the Carbis Bay Hotel.

The meeting was held to gauge local interest in a Carbis Bay WI and, if numbers on the night were anything to go by, there is massive interest.

About 30 to 40 women were expected to attend, but more than double that number came out on a cold and windy night and there was a seemingly unending queue to the meeting room.

Cornwall Federation of WIs Adviser Helen Kestle led the meeting with a brief explanation of the WI, its 100+ year history and a discussion of what a new WI in Carbis Bay might look like.

Guest speaker Amber of Carbis Bay’s Amber Cake Design then spoke to the group about her training and experiences working as a pastry chef in London, what led her to return to Cornwall and how she set up her local business. She then gave the group some of her secret baking tips and tricks.

Helen said: “I was overwhelmed at the response to this WI! It’s amazing that so many women are interested in joining and being part of something new.”

Thanks were given to the Carbis Bay Hotel for its generosity in providing the meeting room, coffee and tea.

The next meeting of Carbis Babes WI will take place on Wednesday, 9th April at 7.00 pm at the Carbis Bay Hotel.

Guest speaker Flotsam Flo will be on hand to talk about how she repurposes and upcycles difficult-to-recycle materials like wetsuits, life jackets, hot tub lids, banners and inflatables into unique, handmade bags and other accessories.
