May Bank Holiday weekend saw the return of big-name acts to Carlyon Bay in St Austell, for Tunes on the Shore.
The three-day music event, held on Friday 23 – Sunday 25 May, featured a line-up of 00’s nostalgia courtesy of Scouting for Girls, club classics with a twist from the Ibiza Orchestra Symphonica, and a Beach Country Festival with Shania, Jonny Cash and Luke Combs tribute acts.
A mixture of anticipation and excitement was palpable amongst the festivalgoers, which was matched by the team behind the event, including Director of South West Bars and Events, Tim Vigus, who reflected: “We’re really quite buoyed and quite positive, this is our first event and the first of many hopefully.”
Reminiscing on the years which saw icons like Tina Tuner, Bon Jovi and The Who take to the Cornwall Coliseum stage, the crowds told us they would be keen to see artists such as Coldplay, Robbie Williams, Oasis, Ed Sheeran, Stereophonics, and Kaiser Chiefs on the beach.
Cornish singer-songwriter Daisy Clark, who supported Scouting for Girls and Chris Moyles’ DJ set on the Friday evening, spoke to us afterwards to share how nothing compares to a hometown gig: “If I’ve been to any festival or show, not in Cornwall, it just doesn’t hit the same.”
But it wasn’t just the music that took centre stage over the weekend, with hundreds of people enjoying food, cocktails and Cornish produce from local businesses on the beach.
Sam from the Mussel Shoal, one of the vendors serving fresh seafood, commented on the small community the businesses have made: “Everyone is really friendly, really welcoming, it’s just a nice vibe – all the businesses sort of looking out for each other…it’s like Team Carlyon!”
Shouting to the crowd of over 1,000 people, Scouting for Girls asked: “Are you ready St Austell?” Judging by the weekend, we think yes; this community seem more than ready for music to officially be back on the beach.
The next event on Carylon Bay will be Tunes at the Coliseum on Friday 25 – Saturday 26 July 2025. For more information and tickets visit www.tunesatthecoliseum.com.
