General Election 2024 – Candidates Feature: Steve Double (Conservative)

CHAOS Radio - Conservative Steve Double

This polling week, CHAOS Radio is featuring each of the candidates standing in the 2024 general election here in the Newquay and St Austell constituency. Keep it CHAOS to read their views, plans, and priorities for our community.

Being the (Conservative) MP for the place I was born and have lived and worked my whole life is the greatest honour of my working life. Despite the incredibly challenging and turbulent political times, I have remained focused on working for the people of Mid-Cornwall.

I have worked to deliver numerous projects including the £80million St Austell-A30 link road, £50million Mid-Cornwall Metro, flood defence schemes and tens of millions for a new college in St Austell.

I was instrumental in enabling the Eden Geothermal project and fought to ensure our new primary schools in Newquay and Carluddon went ahead. We have also secured funding for a new surgical hub at St Austell Hospital that will help in reducing the backlog.

I worked in government to secure the support our local businesses needed through the pandemic, saving thousands of jobs through the furlough scheme and worked within the Department of Health to deliver the world’s fastest vaccine roll out.

I led the campaign to ensure that Cornwall did not miss out on the Shared Prosperity Fund. As a result, Cornwall received the largest allocation of anywhere in England.

The Conservative Government have committed to another three years of the Shared Prosperity Fund, should they form the Government following the General Election.

Labour have made no such promise on this, or for future funding for Cornwall.

But I know there is much more do to and that is why I am standing again in this election.

If I am re-elected my priorities will be – improving access to GPs through new GP led Health Hubs in both Newquay and St Austell; continuing to address our housing crisis by restricting the number of holiday homes and building more truly affordable homes; and grasping the opportunities to secure the jobs of the future in exciting sectors such as lithium extracting, the space industry and renewable energy.

I believe I have shown over the past nine years I have a track record of doing what I set out to do and delivering what our constituency needs. I want to use my experience to continue my work of tackling the challenges we face and grasping the opportunities for our future. I am proud to be a Conservative, but I will always first and foremostly be a proud Cornishman.

Unlike Labour and Reform, whose candidates have just appeared on the scene and don’t even live in the constituency, I have spent my whole life here, working for and with local people.

On 4th July you have the chance to vote for me, as your experienced, effective, local champion, with a track record of delivery, to continue to be your MP for the next five years.
