‘Jack Reacher wouldn’t exist without libraries’ – Celebrating Libraries Week

Alan Ritchson plays Jack Reacher in the eponymous series on Prime Video, but would the story even exist without libraries?

Lee Child, creator of the world-renowned character Jack Reacher, recently highlighted the pivotal role libraries played in his development as an author, writes Alex Duff.

He credits his childhood library in Birmingham for nurturing his love of reading, which eventually led to the creation of his famed fictional ex-military action hero.

It’s because libraries are a cornerstone of community engagement and learning, that we’re celebrating our very own award-winning library here in St Austell this Libraries Week.

“When we have a good book in front of us, we just escape,” says Helen Barden, who volunteers as a relief librarian after a 30-year career in library services.

But as CHAOS Radio’s Tom Howe discovered, St Austell’s library offers so much more than books.

It has its own enchanting story with Grade II listed status, an architectural award for its floor to ceiling glass that bathes the interior in natural light – perfect for reading – and a prize-winning garden that offers a tranquil retreat.

In August, the library welcomed over 9,000 people and even two shire horses – an indicator of its role as a dynamic community hub.

“We’re so much more than a library,” Helen continues. “We’re a community hub with something here for everyone.”

Inside St Austell Library, not just a library but a ‘community hub with something for everyone’

Your free library card is your ticket to it all, from the traditionally lined bookshelves (which interestingly are themselves also Grade II listed) to a wealth of digital resources including audiobooks, newspapers, and magazines. Unable to find a book on the shelves? You can order it in.

Beyond books, St Austell Library offers an array of services from blood pressure monitors to bus pass applications, and hosts a variety of talks, events, and clubs – all freely accessible and advertised on their noticeboards.

Why not revisit this world-class resource during Libraries Week? Located opposite Poltair Park, the library is open Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00 and on Saturday mornings from 10:00 to 13:00.
